Sharon P. Kay teaches Attu style basket weaving at the Urban Unangax^ camp. She patiently works with students to show them the intricate details of creating Aleut style baskets, including preparing and twisting raffia, adding and changing weaves, and adding color to create designs. She also shares her knowledge of the history and different styles of Aleut basket weaving.

Ms. Kay is from Unga Island, Alaska and currently resides in Anchorage, AK. She also teaches basket weaving classes at the Alaska Native Heritage Center, at the Sand Point Culture Camp and other community events. Her self-published book “Learn to Weave an Attu Basket” includes a detailed description and illustrations that shows users how to create a weaving.

 Ms. Kay was a student in the early 1980’s of renowned expert basket weaver, the late Perascovia Wright from Attu, Alaska. After many years of patience and persistence she has since become an expert at Attu style basket weaving. She sells her highly prized baskets locally and world-wide and has baskets on display at the Alaskan Native Medical Center (2nd floor), the Ted Stevens International Airport, Unalaska Museum, Aleutian Pribilof Islands Association and many other locations. She provides consultation to museums and collectors on the subject of Aleutian weaving styles and techniques, conservation methods, era and value.
