Russell's first comic, "My Paper Route," is set in 1970 Alabama during his childhood summer. He learns the tough lesson of having to collect payment from customers along his newspaper route, often receiving nothing. In contrast, other groups involved in fundraising receive only a small percentage of sales while the companies reap the majority of profits.  "Forever on the Run with Dad" expands on this theme, following Russell's family as they constantly move around Texas in search of success. The comic also explores how he discovered his passion for art through a school class and local supply shop.
